Holes have no barrier - PERIOD. very dangerous places those, as you may not know that you left the mundane world until the rabbit says how late he is.

Going through a Hole is more like the Arthurian stories where the knight gets lost in the fog, crosses a stream or gets lost in the forest, then runs into something extraordinary. There is no preparation needed to go through a hole, and known holes are going to be well-guarded against accidental transfers. "Do not play in the old tower!"
