IMG, divine patrons for herobands can be acquired fairly quickly, like a mascot for the team; it is assumed that there are many daimones (I still prefer that term) who are eager to provide their support to their Heortling kinsmen, but are hampered by a lack of connection to the Mundane World. The heroband goes to the priest or god-talker and asks him for "advice"; he conducts a Divination which essentially lets the God World know there's an opening. Response is usually fairly quick. This is just my two cents, though.

We already have an example of this, don't we? The Ibex Moon Society functions as magical protection for Lunar tourists in Sartar; they'd have to, or there would be a lynch mob after the backers - they'd probably hang some scapegoat, like Drofats the Dittyman, out to dry...
