Isn't Elmal associated with lightfore? Perhaps lightfore is Elmal carrying the torch passed to him by Orlanth. If he goes to the Gates of Dawn, perhaps he can take Elmal's place and recieve the torch from Orlanth, and carry it into the night sky. The trouble is, he'd probably have to carry it all the way to the Gates of Dusk before giving it up, fighting off Xenthan night creatures prowling the sky world along the way (Time to dig out the ephemeris). If he ditched the torch along the way, bad things could happen.
