Thge first thing I would say about beggining Hero Wars is wipe your mechnics slate clean, try to forget BRP and other mechanics completely. Then start simple - I gave my players the Pre-Gens from the box set and we messed around with them for a bit, probbing the rules gently. I must confess that when I read HW (and I was one of the first play testers) I hated it, totally - now I am one of its biggest fans, you have to get used to the simplicity of the system and tweak it to suit your own style of play. I always think of Hero Wars as more Epic than any other game system, you really can do whatever you want, the capacity for the game to allow heroic action is almost limitless - everything is handled in the same simple way, both players and GM's can impovise on the fly.
Just enjoy the game, remember Your Glorantha May Vary and go with the flow of the game rather than trying to restrict the players actions.
