Yes, certainly. It makes for good stories.

Yes, certainly. It makes for good stories.

> Under what circumstances might this happen?

Under any unusual circumstances that make for a good story. It could be "enemy action" (foreign heroquesters hijacking your ceremony), it could be just "one of those things" that happen from time to time, or it could be a unique portent of the coming Hero Wars, a sign from the Gods that this person (or this place, or this time) is Special.

> Would the celebrant be likely to survive?

If they're a player character hero, yes. ("No self-respecting hero would fail" to survive being unexpectedly sucked into a heroquest, surely? :-)

If they're not, it depends... what's the story?

Maybe. That could work, but so could other ways of doing it.

> What would the other celebrants at the ritual see?

Depends. They might even notice nothing -- after all, the celebrant is doing exactly the right things right up until everything goes to pot, and stuff does get sorta indistinct on the Other Side... was anyone taking a roll-call? :-)
