The beast spirit (or daimon - no reason why this cannot be a theist problem)needn't be malign. It is quite possible that the curse is targeted similarly to Irish or fairy-tale Geasa ("unless wed to neither man nor woman" or some such mumble), so that the wedding is required.

Of course, the local shaman may have decided that it was time for a feast (100 guests) again, and found the excuse in the shape of the little girl. At least, that's how the unaligned shamans in King of Dragon Pass come across.
