I found useful inspiration in Stonehenge by Bernard Cornwall.

Also, oddly enough, the film "The Patriot" with Mel Gibson. As I was watching the big climactic fight between Mel and the evil, wicked, terrible, just evil again Col Tavington I suddenly got how extended contests worked, especially parting shots.
