I think you're right, though I'm approaching it from a slightly different angle. Thinking about disabled heroes, I was reminded of Nuada of the Silver Hand, and went looking him up. It seems that he lost his hand in a fight, and with it his right to be King (being maimed is a disqualifier). So another god called Dian Cecht (healer and craftsman) forged him a silver hand that was just as good as a real one. But then Dian Cecht's son (an even better healer) managed to heal the original hand, and replaced the now redundant silver one. Dian Cecht, feeling that this was a trifle tactless (and with a certain amount of professional jealousy), killed his son. (Which took some doing, but that's another story.)

How about a Humakti hero-cult, related to Inginew, that specialises in artificial limbs? Craft skills to make the gadget, First Aid to attach it, and then magic to "animate" it so that it acts as part of the body? (Add a condition to the enchantment that restricts it to the person for whom it was intended). Rules-wise, we'd need different difficulty levels for peg-legs and articulated silver hands, but the concept would be the same.

Replacing a missing hand with a sword is heroic but impractical :)

I'm not up to date with how sub/hero cults have changed in the new rules, but it looks like this one requires two mundane skills and one stand-alone Feat. Oh, and a name. I'm no good at names.
