While HeroQuest is definitely more cinematic than RuneQuest, it can
still be played in a very gritty fashion by reducing all Hero Point
awards. If you leave it entirely to luck, as did the James Bond 007
game, heroes become much less prone to sudden and amazing successes
than before. Adapting the James Bond 007 approach would entail only
giving out HP on critical rolls (the equivalent of a Quality Rating
1 in James Bond), whether natural or due to Mastery bumps. It makes
heroes even nastier when facing Average Joes, but then it is a very
regular device of the heroic genre to build up before taking on the
villain by beating the crap out of his or her henchmen. :)
