I agree with this and would also mention that magic is useful for the situation it is designed for. Sandals of Darkness doesn't give you a hero glow as that would be rather counter-productive. I'd almost suggest that negotiating magic doesn't either. It makes your voice surer, your gaze stronger and your determination unshakable but I don't think that your tongue starts to glow (though it could and that would make for an interesting affect negotiating with trolls....)
