The Roman glass items I've seen have been glass. Nice glass, too.

A quick Google turns up this link

which starts glasmaking in around 1500BC (maybe 300BC for beads)
Glass *blowing* was used by the Romans. And they had glass windows.
And it just carries on from there, with some interesting plot and trade bits that can be borrowed :)
