<< Of course, while he is in the common religion, aside from agents of reprisal there are no reasons he couldn't discover an anamist tradition that suits him, and eventually leave LM. Maybe he could get hints that he has the potential to have a fetch? >>
I note that magic concentrators can backslide, and I wonder whether the Rune Lord was backslider interested in the spirit world. For an evil magician type I would suggest that perhaps the Sunset Society is calling, perhaps through nightmares from an unknown source:
Darkness is born,
Ring lead bells, Beat silent gongs,
Strike spider silk cymbals,
Play leathern flutes.
The insects and you and I and all such,
We should hear,
And the souls become flesh.
Darkness is born.
"You are a member of the Sunset Society for you practice the forbidden magic
of the Night. Only males may join your society of Darkness Magicians. Praxian
mothers scare their children with tales of your evil worship and foul
sacrifices. But your dark wisdom comes from other, more potent sources. The well-known
darkness spirits of Prax include Dark Eater, Night Woman, Grandmother of
Spiders, White Princess and the Raven. One of the roles of the society is to
provide an outlet for those drawn to dark practices, and to evil deeds."
So Karal begins as a curious (unconcentrated) inititate but various spirits tempt him, offer him foul magics and powers, and ultimately corrupt him. Perhaps they did the same to his mentor, now a spirit captive in some otherworld hell.
On his narratives, I would suggest that they are too wordy - too many
"slightly" "worries" "minor", or uneccesarily vague: "others may cringe" would be
better with "others cringe" frex. "two thirds" would be better as "most"
I am intrigued about the true story behind his mentor, this gravesite, zombies and the rest. Sounds like a Call of Cthulhu plot to me. Surely he must have some cursed inheritance from this wicked Sage?
Probably too late
