I think it was in the context of angels using their wings to hide their "feet". Seraphim had six wings, two of which covered their face, two their feet and the others were actually used to fly. (Isaiah 6:2 for that description, though I can't remember which of the zillions of books on folklore and mythology I read the genitals thing in.)

Vingans use the natural gifts of the earth for right and honourable purposes. Lunars use foul and evil moon trickery to tempt and seduce our young men and trick them into fathering Lunar spawn. Obviously. You need to be careful of the shade of red...

I'm with Jane on the protection thing. They might be a symbol of luck because only well-off people could afford decent shoes back in the old days. There is some bad luck associated with shoes, though. My parents wouldn't put shoes on the table, as it meant "someone would die" - I think the folkloric connection is that prominently empty shoes symbolise that the owner doesn't need them any more (i.e., is dead).

Freud felt that the foot was phallic and the shoe represented the female sex organs. But that's the sort of thing I'd expect from Freud, the man had a filthy mind...
