Just wanted to recommend another two books.
They're Kalifax and Captain Jenny & the Sea of Wonders by Duncan Thornton. They're very nice fantasy accounts of voyages of discovery. Lovely mythic elements in both books. The two are part of a series and the second is the better of the pair.
The writing is very nice in a rather mannered style (which is the point) and the author is a native of my home province of Manitoba. There is a third book out as well but I haven't read it.
