Got it! With memory jogged that much, I had an idea the author had a weird foreign name that I'd recognise if I saw it. I web-searched for bibliographies and went browsing.

Saklatvala, Beram, 'Arthur, Roman Britain's Last Champion' (Newton Abbot: David & Charles, 1971.) A some what unconventional examination of King Arthur.
