Ian;

Well, when making up bed time stories for my six year old, fighting off sharks almost never fails to appeal. It doesn't have to be sharks, could be some sort of eel, or other nasty looking thing. Just give the turtle people some weakness that they can't do anything about, or that they don't notice, which your kids's heroes can cover.

Another possibility that occurs is to explore differing world views. One of their Sofali friends has lost a "wugnut," one of her family's irreplaceable possessions. The kids can help her look everywhere for it--some playces being possibly a little silly. They might have to help her cover her loss while they all look. They can't find it anywhere....then finally get the description and learn that it is something very very common to them--maybe a bronze spoon or something, which they could easily enough replace, maybe even with one that is better. (and in return they'd be given something cool and turtle-ish).

I hope that was of some help.
