I would strongly recommend for sea adventuring getting hold of Harry
Turtledove's books The Wine Dark Sea & The Gryphon Skull. I beleive
he wrote them under his real name H N Turteltaub. They're set in the
era of the Successor Kings, and deal with the early career of a real
Rhodian admiral and his fictional cousin, when they are doing trading
voyages around the Eastern Mediterranean.
