Why on earth/lozenge would she want to spend the equivalent of nine months being ill and then do a "medically" risky HQ, unless she actually also wanted the "good bits" of child-raising (whatever they are)?

Hmmm, since when has pregnancy been an illness? Both my wife and sister in law were extremelly active during their pregnancy. When you take into account that my sister in law is a fire fighter, trampoline trainer, swimming coach and dog handler, you can see that it did not make her 'ill' under any circumstances. However having worked in care for a long time I can tell you that there are plenty of women more than ready to leave the caring to others rather than stay at home themselves. Also where has this medically risky HQ concept come from? Gloranthan magic must surely radically reduce infant./mother mortality rates. Having been the assistant midwife to three home births, I can tell you that modern medicine has resulted in severe iatrogenesis of the birthing process.
