Mechanically, the thing I wasn't getting was that talents can augment just fine, and as Mike pointed out, you can accumulate a bit of power with them.
As far as character & setting reasoning, the thing I was getting hung up on was that common religions aren't separate religions per se. Its not like you're a heretic in Orlanthi society because you have some Flesh Man talents. I was doing either/or type thinking, which usually goes to bad places.
