As someone said a while back, Misapplied Worship is "the universe"'s way of dealing with mini-maxers. It's a handy concept to keep in mind for other cultures that do things strangely, and *could* always be imposed on a player trying to "beat" the rules, but I think in general you are better off encouraging players to develop interesting characters and allowing them the opportunity to explore the possibilities without imposing sanctions on some choices
