Not everyone was as wretched as the Hagolings, but most were.

For anyone wondering what the heck he?s talking about, see Entekodsiad page 88.
The Lendarshi are the root of the Pelandan peoples. They are equivalent of (or another branch of) the horse barbarians who oversaw Dara Happa in the Gray/Silver Age.

Yes, they are comparatively better off than the Hagolings. And we could name the Jeanarongites, who ruled over the remnants of Dara Happa, as well. The Sylilings were better off too.

But all of these holdings are pitiful, numbering a few hundred people at best. The Lendarshi lord over these outposts of survival as tyrants. (It is not without meaning that the Dara Happans later called these overlords ?demons.?) They do not have the unity or cohesion of the Dragon Pass peoples.

The fact is that the Great Darkness was a horrifying, devastating era that left the humans, elves, dwarves and other non-uz races in a pitiful, wretched state. Surviving outposts were numbered in the hundreds,. at best.
