Good question.
It could have been. But during the Darkness many, many weird things happened.
It's also possible that:
--they just mutated somehow. --they were possessed --their ancestral spirits emerged --their behavior changed them --they became evil animals --it wasn't really them --the people were ruled by woves
I am sure other possibilties exist too.
Remember that during the Darkness all the worlds collapsed into each other.
