Find & rent old Republic Serials and movies based on them - Indiana Jones, The Mummy, etc. The oasis scenes in Mummy Returns (Zombie Pygmies!) are great. This island seems to be a perfect set-up for the pulpiest of Pulp cliches. Oh, and rent king Kong (either the 1933 "classic" version or the recent Peter Jackson one). Read Tarzan and Doc Savage books.
