But if someone's telling me it can't be done, I'll just have to figure out how to do it. Looks like the underlying principle isn't romance per se, it's having something that you'd relied on as being safe, secure, home, etc. taken out from under your feet.

Right. That, we can do, in lots of interesting ways. We were starting to lose track of all the "support staff" NPCs, it must be time to kill a few more off. Ooh, yes, now I think of it, this works rather nicely, just got to figure a bit of logistics... oh, drat, that's even more enemy and allied groups to track!
