I think there's a mistake here. It starts off explaining that names are unique, and then goes on to explain that there are also numbers, which unlike names are unique.

Perhaps it needs to note that full names are unique, but on occasion are contracted to speed communication? There are times when a full name is too long - imagine having to pass the message "Darkness Biological devouring unit advancing up shaft 2145687! Bring unit Gembourg/IronDwarf/MusketSpecialist/Batch254774/Joe555 up here!" Damn troll will have eaten you before you've said all that.
