i've one idea that's been succesful in the past, but which won't suit everyone or every situation.

anyway, during one session a few years ago i wanted to get my newby players into the myth & feel of orlanthi culture. we ended up staging a high holy day celebration, which included the celebrants (the players) renacting the god-time myths recited by the godar (me). it loosened everyone up a little, there was a great mock-duel between orlanth and humakt, we all had fun, and all remembered the stories afterwards...

everyone felt so ridiculous strutting around and play-sword-fighting without any weapons (except, in one memorable case, a length of spagetti each) that any embarrassment over speaking in character was swept aside for sometime after.
