"Rad", as Ian suggested, or "weg" (way) or "path" all fit, as does "straet". A "weg" is a way, path, or road; a "faerweg" (fairway!)or "waegnweg" is a cart road, and a "folcherpath" is a highway. The king's highway is the "fuitherpath" and "wegreath" is literally, highway robbery. A military road, believe it or not, is a "fyrdstraet". A public road to a wic is a "wicherpath".
Also pertinent to our discussion, the Old English word "toll" means both toll and tax, illustrating how closely the two were linked in A-S minds.. A tax collector is a "tollere".
