I think the real answer here is "to be weird." They're something out the ancient ages of Glornatha that have managed to survive (just barely) into the current era. Think of all the strange cratures that evolved here on earth in past ages and how silly some of them looked. Even some creatures living today look very silly, remember that many believed that the duck-billed platypus was a fake.

I've sometimes thought of an alternate Glorantha were, say, ducks are the dominate race and humans are the weird survivors, "monkeys cursed with hairlessness and an upright posture."
