Unless I outnumber the enemy 2-1 or more, in which case I charge, maneuver. I get the feeling that the more you do something, the better you get at it. By midgame, my clan is so proficient at maneuvering that I can win battles doing 40-120 casulties on the enemy for 0-1 of my own. I can recommend taking prisoners if you consistently win combats. This means not only some plunder, but also ransom (or thrall if you play that game).
