An excellent point against all Masada parallels. We do want heroic combat and magics. And we know there are no superior numbers attrition fights like Helm's Deep.

Teja's defense of Monte Cassino (sp?) comes to mind as semi-desirable.

Caernarfon Castle (my model for Karse).

But that had the barbarians outside, and when Fazzur conquered it he used suicide troops (dragonewts).
