Actually now that I think of it the chain idea could work pretty well. Just have two huge windlasses mounted on the howdah that hold the chain. There's a crew of burly half-naked servitors that are trained to tighten and loosen the windlasses as the Bat shrinks and grows. Timing is everything as you don't want to piss the Bat off by making the chains too tight and of course you don't want them too loose. Unless you want to test the aerodynamic abilties of a patio deck.

This makes for cool battles for the windlasses on the Bat's back.
