My impression is, for most things that a good Orlanthi man could do,
there are three cult options, but really only two:
- Obscure, primal Orlanth cult, because Orlanth did it first, because
Orlanth did everything worth doing. But nobody actually worships in
this cult--it's just commemorated in rituals for the mainstream cults
(and occasionally used by hard-core heroquesters).
- Mainstream Orlanth subcult--an aspect or a subsidiary god (most
likely a Thunder Brother). This is the accepted way to do Thing while
still being a regular, easygoing Orlanthi.
- Specialist god. This is for the obsessed weirdos. Humakt, Lhankhor
Mhyhh, Issaries, Odayla--This is for the people who (a) Are singleminded
about the profession to a level that a good Orlanthi probably
shouldn't be (because a man should be able to do *everything*), and
(b) Probably have some issues with Orlanth and/or their communities,
and would like just a *teeny* bit of distance.
And sometimes the lines between those categories are blurry. A
resheathed Humakti is worshipping "Humakt the faithful thane of
Orlanth", which edges just a *bit* closer to category 2 than other
Humakti are.
Ditto, mutatis mutandis, for women and Eralda--you can be a normal,
sane Ernaldan healer-woman, or a Chalana Arroy fanatic.
Am I on the right track there?
