You don't 'wind up' (ie spin the sling around and around) when slinging, as it makes aiming impossible, and you can sling either horizontally or vertically (ie over your head), so slingers could probably form ranks pretty much as close as archers.

As an after thought, slings would be ideal missile weapons for durulz (and other amphibious races), as a sling is inherently water resistant, as are the bullets.
