This would fit with what we know about the Great Compromise - The Gods have no free will and can not change, but they are immortal as time does not exist for them. Whereas in the the mortal world change and free will are possible, but so is ageing as Time does exist there.

So for someone to become immortal, they must somehow refute the Great Compromise (aka Time)or retire to the Other Side.
