Elephant Wars: Mammoths and Mastodons

This is a questions about these two elephants, created by Valind and Genert respectively, that fought each other in the Elephant Wars.

The result seems to be Mastodons in Fronela (from Anaxials Roster) at the edge of Valind's Glacier, and Mammoths in Brolia and Aggar, which seems a bit counter-intuitive.

We also have the Hogari (Mammoth People) and the mystical Sabre Toothed Mountain Mammoth beloved of the Grotarons.

Are/were the Hogari really Mastodon People? If not, do they (did they) hunt the Mastodons of Fronela as an enemy species. Is the Sabre Toothed Mountain Mammoth the last remaining part of a Mammoth Army generally defeated in Fronela by Mastodon regiments? Did they betray the forces of Valind to the Mastodons?
