I thought the runes we all know and love were a simplification the God Learners did after observing all the different symbols used in the world to represent different powers. A bit like if you took a course on Symbology and started seeing patterns in some of the symbols and did your own simplified universal lisy of symbols.
Therefore, I think the westerners must have another, more ancient alphabet that they use prior to that God Learner study.
