Are you looking for a Gloranthan explanation or a RuneQuest explanation? Or both?

To begin with though, Wizardy is sorcery. It deals in revelations offered by the Invisible God that allow practitioners to manipulate the physical nature of the universe. It allows them bend nature rather than channel it, which means that many cultures view sorcery with suspicion and hatred. It was also the magic of the God Learners who, as everyone knows, created a great cataclysm through sorcery, proving that its not to be trusted.

Divine magic channels the powers of a god, which are themselves manifestations of the runes and combinations of runes. Spirit magic is communing with, and channelling the power of, spirits or essences, which, in their raw states, also channel the runes.

Sorcery is therefore a very different form of magic as its practitioners are directly manipulating cosmic forces using formulae and developed knowledge (rather than prayer or devotion, or a spirit medium). The Christianity aspect comes more from the view that Gloranthan sorcerers tend to hail from the west of Genertela where Malkionism - worship of the Invisible God and his prophet - originates. Although there are some Christian overtones, its perhaps easier to look at Malkionism more as a blend of Judaism, Islam and Christianity as it is quite a complex belief system with certain mystical and even scientific elements thrown into the mix.

But at its heart, wizardy is sorcery. If using Mongoose RuneQuest II, then the sorcery rules found in the core book are designed to reflect Malkioni wizardry - although, for the Third Age, you might want to tone down the power levels sorcerers are capable of. The sorcery rules were designed to model the Second Age where sorcerers are more prevalent and powerful than during the Third Age.

Hope this helps.
