For me, one of the weird things would be that it does not flap its wings in any kind of relation to what the air around it is doing. It could glide through a storm or flap furiously in fine weather. The real reason for this is just to make it creepy. As explanations, it might be true that (a) it partly lives in the hero plane, and that is the weather it is encountering; (b) it rides on moonbeams, not air; or (c) somethings else that the heroes invent and make True.
