Skates WILL be important in Orlanth is dead. They do use them in Dark Season to get around.

MANY streams and rivers freeze. But I think snowshoes are probably more likely - the terrain is more forested and hilly than traditional nordic skiing.

But then, I'm a snowshoeboy from way back - its a Cultural Thing. =)
