Sudden Death extended contests

I'm toying with using an idea suggested by a player in an upcoming Hero Wars game (starting next week).

We found extended contests a bit dull the last time around and some players have a hard time visualising what APs realy represent. If an AP loss means you're at a disadvantage, shouldn't that mean you're at a penalty to your rolls?

The result of this reasoning is the Sudden Death method of extended contest resolution. You say what you're doing in the contest, and the GM sets an AP risk level (or however you determine AP stakes) as normal. Instead of keeping track of APs, whoever would normaly lose APs takes that as a penalty on future ability rolls in that contest instead. These aren't wounds necesserily, the penalties simply represent the fact that you're knocked down on your arse, or staggering back, or whatever. An action ntended to recover your tactical possition will simple remove a penalty from you rather than inflict one on your opponent, whatever seems reasonable.

Obviously contest are going to be over a lot quicker, as when you start sloosing, you'll likely keep losing. That's probably no bad thing, since long extended contests can get dull.

We've obviously not worked out formal rules for this, but what do you all think as a general idea?
