I don't think the rules cover that one in particular,

out of the cuff:

you must win an unrelated action against the opposer before trying to lend the AP.

In case of complete victory, you could lend the AP without even losing an action or gain a big bonus in your lending attempt.

In case of complete defeat, you can't lend the AP and you still lose the AP (or another kind of serious hampering).
