And often, they just take too much time.
I don't want a night's gaming coming to a screching halt because the players have decided they want to use an extended contest to cross a river... or for *everything* they do.
I generally reserve them for the major encounters and dramatic climaxes. Going to 'battle mode' is signifcant and special. Ears perk up and a *oh, this is going to be ugly/good/now-we-have- you!/etc* mood suffuses the group.
