As I understand it your character's ability rating represents how effective (s)he is at using that ability to resolve conflicts. And improving that rating is not so much improving the ability itself as improving how well you use it. (C.F. the thread discussing the idea that having a rating for 'Strong' does >not< represent your character's physical strength.)
So what does an ability rating of your character's follower represent? Is it how gppd the follower is at using the ability or is it how well your character is at getting the most out of the follower's ability?
Is the answer the same if the character is a shaman and the follower is spirit?
