Sure, but play the story, not the rules. If you are in a fight, and your follower-Sage is 'way over there behind the wall while your hero is out in the thick of the fighting (basically, is not involved in the fight in any way, shape of form), it doesn't make sense to seriously injure the Sage just because your hero gets chopped up, does it? (And then the hero can listen to all the historical precedents to not do what he did while he recuperates...)
