Yes, come to think of it, "breaking a contract" may well be a good way of looking at it. An oath rather than/instead of a contract, probably. If the initial contract is for a fixed, limited, period of time ("the current adventure", say?) then there's no hard feelings when you leave. And if you're not keeping the membership, no need to spend a HP to cement it.
Come to think of it, I have another example of leaving
a heroband on friendly terms, and it wasn't (meant to
be) a temporary deal. Way way back in the Swords
campaign, when Guy was running it, a senior NPC got
very badly injured and was taken to the White Ladies
to be healed. Next time we saw her, she wasn't Humakti
any more, she was a lay member of CA :( Well, at that
rate, she *couldnt'* be a member of the
heroband/Legion any more. Not her fault, though, so
she left on good terms. In fact the relationship
("loyal to...") stayed: it's probably her highest
ability.
