I don't think we are suggesting that it should be allowed without narrator agreement. I would ask the player to take vaguer terms with more atmospheric names. Frx, Otti's Sword of Death, The Staff of Life, Andrin's gloves. Much more possibility to later create backstory, improvise new powers.

Becuase they need that sword. In this case the magic sword is a McGuffin, an excuse for adventrue and daring deeds. HP are power ups. What is the difference between 2HP on a new magic sword and 2HP on a new ability - in fact the player may gain less benefit in nmbers from the item, but may have a better character conception.

Player: 'I spend 2 HP on Ortossi Sword of Death' Narrator: 'Who was Ortossi?'
Player: 'The murderous former owner of the sword' Narrator: 'Okay I may use your ability the sword as a flaw when we meet the kin of its former victims'
Player: 'still want it - I spend 2HP'

remember your creating myth.
