I'm with Trotsky here,

Barntar is a son of Orlanth and Ernalda, and I can see him as the child that takes to the Earth side of his heritage, as Vinga takes to the Air side.

But both are of mixed elemental heritage, as is Orlanth himself! Orlanth is the son of the primal storm and a mountain goddess (earth, and by some accounts draconic). The metal of pure Air is Tin, and the metal of Earth is copper. Orlanth's metal is bronze, which is mixed, and more resilient than either parent.

I wouldn't try to dumb down Glorantha too much, and like Trotsky said "hammer the square pegs into round holes" just because it makes the game engine run neater,
