The thing to remember is that Yelmalio is not a deity worshipped in Yelmic regions. His cult is made up of barbarians who are trying to emulate Yelmic attitudes and culture, but inevitably (in the eyes of Yelmites, who are sticklers for detail) get it wrong.

It's somewhat analogous to the history of Christian missionaries arriving in Southern India and being met by people who claim to have been brought to Christ by St Thomas. They seem to talk about the same things, but there's just something a bit wrong about them.
