On a more personal level than the king, you could introduce lunars who could be more personal rivals. For example:
- a small group of lunar mercenaries / guards with far better equipment and magic than the characters have early on, and experience in providing caravan guards (or whatever role is appropriate... possibly hired by leaders in the characters tribe?) Who mock, push around, or even defeat the characters in contests. Clearly these fools wouldn't survive three days on their own in the wilderness, but they are cocky in their superiority over the primitive tribesmen. Eventually of course the characters may turn the tables, but until then these guys provide an example of the advantages of civilization.
- lunar merchants (or other role) who hire the player characters. Over time it becomes clear that they think the Balazarings are stupid and naive....and that indeed the characters have signed up for terrible pay, far poorer than lunars in the area would expect (the equivalent of being paid in strings of beads). Maybe at some point the characters learn their employers language, or meet someone who does, and learn how they were being mocked (say, the employers can't be bothered learning the native names, and call them all by nicknames...which turn out to mean things like "goat fart" "dirt licker" or "mighty big smell."
Nothing like having someone else lord about and treat you with disdain to give you inventive to turn the tables!
