Quantum Mechanics and the Free Will of Gods

I might have posted this before, but it has come up again: Stephen Donaldson, in the last volume of his "Gap" series, defines the situation of the Gloranthan Gods quite precisely:

"The quantum mechanics of his conundrum remained as Heisenberg had defined them. By his own efforts he had taken hold of events in flux in order to name them accurately; establish them in their positions. Therefore he was prevented from knowing where those events tended. Certainty precluded certainty."

By identifying themselves with the Runes, and by in effect BECOMING the runes, the Gods deprive themselves of the possibility of affecting passing events -- this is the meaning of their inability to act within Time.

Of course, this is a different version of my earlier statement, that the more you know, the less you can do. The Invisible God, who knows EVRYTHING, can do nothing. (A paradox of Kabbalism, by the way -- God makes no choices at all -- he simply IS) As characters rise towards Godhood, their knowledge rises and their ability to choose declines. People seek Power because they imagine that greater Power will give them greater Freedom -- but nothing can be further from the Truth!
